Before crossing the Adriatic: complete the systems check

The day after Venice, HERA is due to cross to Croatia. The corrected in-mast mainsail therefore has to do more than move once. Before a longer passage, the question is whether the solution works through the range that will actually be needed.

A repair is not yet proof of function

Correct furling is followed by unfurling, controlled reefing and stowing the sail again. The crew watches its run, tension and line routing. Only that complete cycle shows whether the system can once more be treated as a reliable part of sail handling.

The next passage determines the depth of the check

An Adriatic crossing requires different reserves from a short move inside a harbour. Preparation covers the sailing and propulsion systems needed for the route, navigation and lights, communication, energy and water. The exact scope follows the yacht, weather, crew and intended passage.

The crew is part of the systems check

Working equipment is of limited value if responsibilities and fallbacks remain unclear. The crew therefore knows who reports a change, who decides and which independent alternative is available. Harbour provides time for a second attempt. At sea, the crew has to work with the condition established before departure.

A test result needs a consequence

A check is complete only when an unusual result leads to a decision. That may mean another test, a repair, a different way of using the system or an adjusted route. Departing and hoping that the condition improves would not be preparation; it would merely move the problem out to sea.
