On 1 July, HERA approaches the Venice lagoon from Caorle. For the approximately 15-metre Bavaria 50, this is not a place for improvised course changes. Fairways, traffic and the yacht’s need for manoeuvring space have to fit together before the familiar skyline begins to draw attention away from the water.
The crew is ready before the entrance
Fenders and lines are prepared early and roles are agreed. One person handles the yacht while the crew watches the surroundings and gets ready for berthing. Thunderstorm cells stand over Grado and the surrounding area, and at times HERA makes only one or two knots. The developing weather therefore remains part of the approach.
The lagoon rewards a calm lookout
Many different craft share Venice’s waterways. On a 50-foot yacht, course changes, remaining speed and wind pressure continue to act longer than on a small boat. Clear communication and an early, deliberate line are more useful than late corrections. The view can be enjoyed whenever the navigational situation leaves room for it.
Fifty feet changes the preparation
A 50-foot yacht uses the same lagoon as smaller boats but needs different margins. Beam, draught, turning space and overall length affect fairway choice, encounters and berth planning. HERA’s Venice approach is therefore prepared through route and depth checks, traffic observation and clear line and fender roles. Size brings no priority; it requires earlier coordination with the available space.
