San Giorgio Maggiore with a 50-foot yacht

Approaching Venice from the water was one of the defining moments of this summer cruise. SY HERA’s berth was at San Giorgio Maggiore. St Mark’s Square lay across the basin, so Venice remained unmistakably present even after the yacht had been secured.

At around 15 metres, HERA is not a yacht that can simply be squeezed into any available gap. Arriving without a reservation meant finding a berth that suited her length, the line arrangement and safe access to the pontoon. A suitable place was found at the end of a floating pontoon. The marineros assisted in a friendly, competent and practical manner.

The berth has to fit the yacht

For a 50-foot yacht, the view is never the only consideration. Manoeuvring space, fenders, lines and a controlled final approach come first. At the outer end of the pontoon, HERA was not forced into a narrow space. The position still required good preparation: lines had to be ready, roles on board had to be clear and instructions from the pontoon had to be understood immediately.

Assistance is especially useful in a busy lagoon. It does not replace the skipper’s responsibility, but it makes the final metres easier to manage. A delicate approach therefore ended in a calm berthing manoeuvre.

Venice remains part of the stay

Once HERA was secure, shore power and water were connected. There was then time to take in the setting. The familiar skyline around St Mark’s Square stood across the water. The arrival had not really ended; it had simply moved from the fairway to the pontoon.

The stay illustrates what matters with a larger cruising yacht. The best berth is not the one with the most famous name, but the one where yacht and crew can arrive safely and experience the destination from the water. For HERA, that place was at San Giorgio Maggiore.
