Preparing to berth in Rovinj town harbour

The manoeuvre begins outside harbour. Rovinj remains in view while the practical preparation takes place aboard.

Logbook Logbook

On 7 July, before arriving in Rovinj, the crew checks the requirements for berthing in the town harbour and the necessary length of a line. Fenders, lines and roles are prepared before HERA enters the tighter harbour area.

Assign roles in advance

Fenders and lines are prepared, responsibilities are kept clear and short feedback is agreed. Long or loud explanations are then unnecessary inside the harbour.

A plan needs an abort option

If space or approach do not fit, another attempt must remain possible. That is not a failure but part of a controlled harbour manoeuvre.

A town harbour requires precise crew work

Rovinj rewards arrival with direct access to town, but the crew first needs order. Quay, neighbouring boats and instructions may be close together. Lines must be long enough and routed safely, while speed, distance and the next step are communicated briefly. A prepared alternative allows the manoeuvre to stop and restart without drama.

Rovinj’s old town originally occupied a separate coastal island. The dividing channel was filled in only in 1763, connecting it to the mainland while the medieval street pattern remained. From the town harbour, that history is still visible in space: houses rise densely over the former island and St Euphemia’s Church marks the skyline’s highest point.

Frequently asked questions

Why did the line length matter?

It had to suit the approximately 15-metre yacht and the expected mooring arrangement.

What is clarified before entering harbour?
